However, several digital industry leaders and specialists on fake news have raised concern that technological advancements in A.I. will constantly be one step ahead of the tools.

The New York Times tested five new services using more than 100 fake photographs and actual photos in order to evaluate the efficacy of the available artificial intelligence (AI) detection technology. The findings indicate that while the services are improving quickly, they occasionally fall short.

They search for distinctive patterns in the arrangement of the pixels, as well as in their sharpness and contrast. Typically, such signals are produced when A.I. programmes produce images.

However, the detectors do not take into account any context cues, making it improbable that a lifelike robot could be present in a picture of Elon Musk. That is one drawback of using technology to identify fakes.

Sensity, Hive, and Inholo, the firm behind Illuminarty, among others, did not contest the findings and claimed their systems were always being improved to keep up with the most recent developments in A.I.-image production. Hive added that when it analyses lower-quality photos, categorization errors can occur. Optic, the business that created A.I. or Not, and umm-maybe did not reply to requests for comment.

To conduct the tests, The Times gathered artificial intelligence (AI) photos from artists and researchers familiar with different generative tools including Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E, which can produce convincing representations of nature, real estate, cuisine, and more, as well as realistic portraits of people and animals. The Times’ photo library provided the actual pictures that were used.

One strategy to lessen the damage from AI photos has been hailed: detection technologies.

Less persuaded are AI professionals like Chenhao Tan, an assistant professor of computer science and the director of the Chicago Human+AI research group at the University of Chicago.

“In general, I don’t think they’re great, and I’m not optimistic that they will be,” he remarked. In the short term, it’s likely that they will be able to perform with some accuracy, but in the long run, anything unique that a person does with photos, A.I. will be able to replicate as well, and it will be very challenging to tell the difference.

Hive, for instance, properly identified the Yeti artwork as AI-generated after running a higher-resolution version of it.

Such flaws can reduce the effectiveness of A.I. detectors as a tool to combat false content. Images that become popular online are frequently duplicated, saved again, downsized, or cropped, hiding the crucial signals that A.I. detectors rely on.
